Feelings of boredom, depression, and even anxiety can throw life into a standstill, sapping your will to get out of bed and face the day. It can be difficult to overcome these feelings that root you to the spot, and you wonder what in the world can bring you out of this rut. The answer you’re looking for is a spark — a newfound meaning that propels and adds purpose to your life. That purpose, that meaning you’re looking for, can be found in a new hobby.

Hobbies are activities that are rooted in what you enjoy to do. Any small passion that captures your imagination has the potential to be a hobby. When you start getting into your hobby, you’ll learn new things about yourself, be able to grow in your skills and ability, and start opening new doors in your life toward new people and opportunities.

The social aspects of hobbies are especially important for those who are in a bout of depression or dealing with addiction. Sometimes your life can push you in circumstances that make you want to shield yourself from others. There are lots of different hobbies that can open you up to new relationships and add meaning to your life. Here are three sociable hobbies you can try.

Playing Music

Everyone can connect to a good song, and many of us start playing an instrument at some point or another in our lives. However, eventually life catches up, and you’re suddenly putting away the guitar and focusing on your career and family. If you have a passion for music, or if you once played an instrument and had to stop, now might be the time to get back into music. You will feel proud as you’re able to play for friends and family and will slowly build confidence in your musical abilities. You might even decide to join a band with friends or coworkers, creating deeper and more meaningful relationships with your friends.

Online Gaming

In recent years more and more adults are carrying on their passion for video games that began in their childhood. Thanks to the internet, gaming has exploded into its own sprawling community, according to Ted.com. Many of the most popular video games such as League of Legends, Fortnite, and Minecraft are primarily multiplayer, giving you the chance to connect and play with people from all across the globe. If you are a gamer at heart, then perhaps logging on and burning a few hours on the PC or console can help release some endorphins and get you back in a positive place. Use your gaming hobby as a reward system at the end of the day to give you something to get you through work or school.

Making & Sharing Art

You don’t need to be a Da Vinci or a Van Gogh to pick up a paintbrush. There are so many different mediums of visual art with so many different styles and approaches — plenty enough room for you to find your own niche. Whether if it’s sculpting, drawing, or even digital painting, there’s a way for you to express yourself. Creating art reduces stress and can help you cope with depression or anxiety. Additionally, thanks to the internet, there are lots of sharing platforms to help you get your art out there, opening doors for you to meet other artists just like you.

If you don’t like the way you’re living right now, then the easiest solution is to make a change. No matter what hobby fits you, you won’t be disappointed by how quickly life starts turning around. Go find your new hobby and start bringing music, color, and laughter back into your life.
